SFJAZZ Presents... Uruguayan Candombe w/ Edgardo Cambon (Published: July 17, 2013)
Saturday, August 3rd 5-6:30pm
"Candombe" from the African term "ka-ndombe" in the Kimbundu (Bantú- Angolan) language, means dance with drums, and is the most important form of Afro-Uruguayan folk music. Candombe is to Uruguayans what samba is to Brazilians, rumba and son to Cubans, bomba and plena to Puerto Ricans, etc., and in this hands-on workshop with Uruguayan native percussionist Edgardo Cambón, students will experience the instantaneous joy of this vibrant rhythm that has been the foremost cultural expression of this South American nation. Traditional Candombe drums will be provided, and students are encouraged to bring in conga drums as suitable substitutes. Open to teens and adults of all levels and abilities!
