Angel City Jazz Festival Begins Oct 4
(Published: September 18, 2013)

The Angel City Jazz Festival presented by Angel City Arts, the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA, and The Jazz Bakery and Icons Among Us: jazz in the present tense, returns for its 6th annual musical feast, featuring a bounty of innovative musicians, established artists as well as emerging talent with a focus on the creative west coast vibe.

This year's theme, "Metamorphosis", aptly describes the forward thinking of the festivals creators celebrating the transformation, of this constantly evolving born in America art form.

Kicking off the festival on October 4, LACMA's Friday night jazz series will feature the 2013 Young Musicians Competition Winners and Nicole Mitchell's Sun Dial Ensemble. This offers a great opportunity to hear young upcoming jazz stars and share their excitement and enthusiasm for the music. Next on the LACMA bill, noted flautist Nicole Mitchell will debut her Sun Dial Ensemble with music celebrating African American culture with a blend of jazz, gospel, pop, and African percussion.

October 5, electric guitarist John Scofield will bring his electronic-infused Uberjam Band to Royce Hall with Andy Hess on bass, rhythm guitarist Avi Bortnick, and Tony Mason on drums creating a fusion of jazz, funk atmospheric and electronic music.

Following Scofield on the Royce Hall stage will be upright bass great Dave Holland who will debut his Prism project featuring Craig Taborn on electric and acoustic pianos, expressive drummer Eric Harland, and the brilliant soulful guitar of Kevin Eubanks.

Sunday October 6, will be a huge evening of music and film at the beautiful Ford Amphitheater where the first and second episodes of acclaimed four part documentary series Icons Among Us: jazz in the present tense, will screen at the indoor theater followed by a stellar line up of music with the Richard Sears Group featuring drummer "Tootie" Heath, Greg Osby with Anat Cohen, Cuban saxophonist Yosvany Terry and Grammy nominated Kneebody whose music spans the unlikely distance between D'Angelo's Voodoo music, Miles Davis, Elliot Smith, and Bill Frisel in the outdoor amphitheater.

The following weekend, October 11, 12 and 13 the festival continues the musical banquet with Grammy winning jazz, hip-hop and R&B pianist Robert Glasper, at Zipper Hall. New generation drummer Jim Black, John Hollenbeck & The Claudia Quintet and, Cuban born drum virtuoso Dafinis Prieto performing movements of his award winning Chamber Music America commission "The Emotion Series: Taking the Soul for a Walk" at Redcat.
