Jazz Arts Group presents the Bria Skonberg Quintet - Fri. Oct. 10 at Lincoln Theatre
(Published: September 23, 2014)

Columbus, OH - The Jazz Arts Group's Inside Track series continues its 2014-15 season on Friday, October 10 at the historic Lincoln Theatre with the Columbus return of award-winning bandleader/trumpeter/vocalist Bria Skonberg and her quintet.

The Bria Skonberg Quintet is a powerhouse combination of emerging talent in the New York jazz scene. Within the last year, Bria has earned a Jazz Journalists' Association nomination for "Up-and-coming Jazz Artist of the Year," was included in DOWNBEAT Magazine's Rising Star Critics' Poll, was honored with a NY Bistro Award for "Outstanding Jazz Artist," and was introduced to central Ohio audiences with stand-out performances with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra in "Bravo, Benny!"

Best known for her knowledge of classic jazz and instigative nature, she is creating a style rooted in hot jazz, world percussion, soul and modern effects available on her new album, Into Your Own. For this venture she has assembled a group of unique individuals from the US and Canada that are proficient in the roots of jazz with 21st century sensibilities.

"The first ten years of my career, I did a lot of re-creation, very traditional jazz," recalls Skonberg. "Then I started taking risks... and then some more risks, and then doing some serious re-imagining. New York is about putting yourself out there, being in this big pond and hearing there are ten people who do what you do." It made her look around the wide-open world of music, and realize that there was more room for her own voice in her music.

"My favorite singer is Lauryn Hill. She tells the truth as she sees it," explains Skonberg with a laugh. "The artists that I gravitate towards-Lauryn, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell-created their own style, a pop format with jazz flexibilities and different interests."

Advance tickets are available for $20 (general admission) through the CAPA Ticket Office (614-469-0939) and through all Ticketmaster outlets. Showtime is 8:00 pm.

JAZZ ACADEMY COMPANION WORKSHOP: Friday, October 10, 4:00 p.m. Versatility, tradition, innovation and creativity are at the core of Bria Skonberg's inspiring musical identity. Before the concert, join Bria and her band at the Jazz Academy as she explores the evolution of jazz improvising from its New Orleans roots and its advancement through the 20th century, while discussing the importance of individual creativity and her experiences that have led her to become "one of the most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation!" Admission for this workshop is $10, and pre-registration is required. Register via phone at 614-294-5200 x 107 or online at www.jazzartsgroup.org.

The Inside Track series gives music lovers from all walks of life the chance to stretch their ears and stretch themselves at the newly restored and historic Lincoln Theatre. The revamped small-ensemble series will also feature Grammy Award-winning saxophonist/composer/educator Jeff Coffin & the Mu'tet (January 16, 2015); and the ear-bending Latin rhythms of Ritmos Unidos (March 27, 2015). Call 614-294-5200 or visit www.jazzartsgroup.org for more information.

The Inside Track music series is presented by State Auto and Sequent with ongoing support from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, The Columbus Foundation, the Ohio Arts Council, The Reinberger Foundation, and The Westin Columbus.
