An Evening of Jazz and Celebration!
Abdullah Ibrahim In Concert

Legendary South African Jazz Performer Celebrates 80th Birthday
With New York City Live Performance

October 2, 2014 / New York, NY - On Wednesday, October 15th, MIST (My Image Studios) and Madiba Harlem will host the 80th birthday concert celebration of revered South African pianist and composer, Abdullah Ibrahim also known as Dollar Brand.

The jazz legend will be accompanied by artists Rene Mclean, Band Urban Dijailiya and Bakithi Kumalo. Doors will open promptly at 5:30 pm for cocktails and refreshments and the concert will begin sharply at 7:00 pm. Patrons will also be invited to partake in a prix fixe dinner immediately after the show.

Ibrahim has been hailed as the greatest exponent of Cape jazz, performing with artists such as Max Roach and Randy Weston. The legendary performer's birthday bash coincides with the grand opening of Madiba Harlem, one of New York's finest, authentic South African restaurants, made famous by its thriving Brooklyn location. The restaurant will celebrate its grand opening with a concert to remember.

During Ibrahim's long and glorious career, he has toured the world extensively, performing as soloist with symphony orchestras and with legendary jazz artists. His music reflects many of the musical influences of his childhood in the multicultural port areas of Cape Town, ranging from traditional African songs to the gospel of the AME Church andragas, to more modern jazz and other Western styles. Ibrahim is considered the leading figure in the sub-genre Cape jazz. Within jazz, his music particularly reflects the influence of Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington.
