(Published: October 20, 2014)

The Will Calhoun Quartet, with Will on drums, Orrin Evans on piano, Luques Curtis on Bass, and Jowee Omicil on sax, will be appearing at Spielboden Jazz Club, Dornbirn, Austria, October 22.

Will Calhoun is one of the world's most highly regarded drummers, a two-time Grammy winner with Living Colour, whose recent Motéma jazz CD, "Life in This World," has received great critical acclaim. The recording features jazz legends Ron Carter, Donald Harrison, Wallace Roney, Marc Cary, Charnett Moffett, and John Benitez. Will has recorded and/or toured and performed with diverse artists including Mick Jagger, Mos Def, Oumou Sangare, Marcus Miller, and Wayne Shorter.

´╗┐Two time Grammy nominee and Pew Fellow, Orrin Evans has been recognized as one of the most distinctive and inventive pianists of his generation. In a short span of time Orrin has earned the titles of pianist, composer, bandleader, teacher, producer and arranger. The New York Times described the pianist as "...a poised artist with an impressive template of ideas at his command," a quality that has undoubtedly assisted in keeping Orrin at the forefront of the music scene.

Luques Curtis ("...the excellent bassist Luques Curtis" NY Times 1/31/13) has been performing nationally and internationally with artists such as Eddie Palmieri, Brian Lynch, Gary Burton, Stefon Harris, Donald Harrison, Elio Villafranca, Francisco Mela, and others. He has recently released an album with his brother called "Blood, Spirit, Land, Water,Freedom" on Truth Revolution Records. Luques was also part of Brian Lynch's Grammy-winning CD "Simpatico". You can hear him on Gary Burton's CD "Next Generations"; Dave Valentin's "Come Fly With Me"; Sean Jones' "Roots","Kaleidoscope",and "The Search Within"; Christian Scott's CD "Rewind That",and "Anthem"; Albert Rivera's CD "Re-Introduction"; Etienne Charles' CD "Folklore".

More than a mere player, Jowee Omicil is a unique and prolific composer, producer, arranger, vocalist, band leader, and music instructor who has devoted much of his time to passing down his broad knowledge of musicology to students of all ages. On May 18, 2010, Jowee had the honor of being invited to President Barack Obama's White House to play his music for its inaugural observation of Haitian Flag Day before 150 VIP guests. With his latest release, "Naked", Jowee offers a work that is steeped in purpose yet listener-friendly and accessible to all. In essence, that is the only way he knows to approach the making of his music. "Jowee Omicil has produced a disc that reveals new gifts with each listen" (Willard Jenkins)

Spielboden is located at Farbergasse 15.
