June 11 and 14: Lukas Ligeti's 50th birthday concerts presented by ACFNY
(Published: May 20, 2015)

The Austrian Cultural Forum New York (ACFNY) presents two concerts celebrating the 50th birthday of composer-percussionist Lukas Ligeti. The programs feature a retrospective of Ligeti's compositions.

The concert on June 11 at 7:30pm at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York (11 East 52nd Street) features performances of Ligeti's solo and small ensemble works. Performers include Ligeti's band Notebook, a classical/indie rock band which explores the cross-currents of classical, modernist and world music. Also performing are Thomas Bergeron, trumpet, Jennifer Hymer, pianist, and Candy Chiu, Ben Reimer and David Cossin, percussion. Admission is free, and reservations (at acfny.org) are required.

On June 14 at 5:30pm, ensemble mise-en will perform world premieres and U.S. premieres of works by Lukas Ligeti at Roulette (509 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn). The program also includes the pianist Vicky Chow's world premiere performance of Trinity, the world premiere of Thinking Songs, a work commissioned by a consortium of marimba players, and other works by Ligeti. Tickets are $20 ($15 for students and seniors), available at Roulette.org.

A champion of inter-cultural music and acclaimed as one of the world's most ingenious composers, composer-percussionist Lukas Ligeti has developed his own multifaceted approach to making music. With a compositional style that has been described as "defiantly individual," his music comprises a determined fusion between indie rock, electronic musics, the rich traditions of African music, and influences from the classical orchestral tradition. Ligeti, believes "we find a new beauty by pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zone."
