The 2015 Roberto Ocasio Foundation Latin Jazz Concert

With Preeminent Latin Jazz Artist--BOBBY SANABRIA--7x Grammy® Nominee

Cleveland, Ohio - The Roberto Ocasio Foundation today announced that Key Bank will sponsor and present the 11th annual Roberto Ocasio Foundation Latin Jazz Concert on Friday, July 17, 2015, 7pm, at the Cleveland Institute of Music (11021 East Blvd. in University Circle; Cleveland 44106-Complimentary Parking). The concert, free and open to the public, is the finale to the Foundation's 2015 Latin Jazz Music Camp, July 12-17, at Case Western Reserve University.

Camp Artistic Director/Artist-In-Residence, Bobby Sanabria, world renowned drummer/percussionist, composer, director, educator, and seven-time Grammy nominated recording artist, will direct The 2015 Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz "Youth" Project, faculty, and guests in an incredible 90-minute big-band show of energy and imagination. Its repertoire, comprised of classic and contemporary music from the Latin-jazz continuum, utilizing Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and Puerto Rican rhythms, is a representation of the students' week-long curriculum of learning and living the Latin-jazz perspective and style. The Camp and Concert were established in 2005 to honor Cleveland's beloved late Latin-jazz musician and bandleader, Roberto Ocasio, and his commitment to teaching Latin Jazz and its heritage.

The Roberto Ocasio Foundation was established in 2004 to perpetuate Roberto Ocasio's music and to further his efforts on behalf of music education, diversity, and young people's achievements. The Foundation provides a program of events and educational clinics, lectures,and demonstrations throughout the year in honor of Roberto as well as its signature program, the annual Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Music Camp. Roberto's lifetime of music began at the age of ten with later formal training in NYC and at Boston's Berklee College of Music. He performed locally and across the U.S., opening or sharing the stage with national artists and taking his talents to schools and colleges, teaching and strenuously promoting knowledge of Latin music and its roots. His award-winning band, The Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Project, established in 1997, introduced Latin Jazz to northeast Ohio and achieved wide popularity and recognition. Bobby Sanabria (Ocasio Camp Artistic Director/Artist-In-Residence) - A world-renowned seven-time Grammy®-nominated drummer/percussionist, director, bandleader, composer/arranger in the Latin and jazz genres, he has performed and collaborated with a veritable Who's Who in the world of jazz and Latin music, including the legendary founders of Latin jazz: Dizzy Gillespie
and Mario Bauzá (as drummer for 8 yrs in the Mario Bauzá Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra). A Jazz Journalists Association awardee and award-winning documentary producer for PBS and the Smithsonian, Mr. Sanabria is considered one of the world's foremost scholars and educators of jazz, Afro-Cuban, and Latin American music. A prestigious Faculty Association recognized graduate of Berklee College of Music, he is a professor at New York's renowned Manhattan School of Music and the New School Jazz Orchestras at both institutions, receiving Latin Grammy® nominations for two MSM big-band CDs.
