Two New Classes at New York Jazz Workshop!
(Published: September 29, 2015)

The New York Jazz Workshop is very excited to announce two new 10-week long classes taught by internationally celebrated artist-educator Richard Boukas. Taking place at Michiko Studios near Times Square, these two courses are perfect for instrumentalists and vocalists of of all levels.

Dynamic Ear Training for the Contemporary Musician: Saturdays 10am-11am

This course is designed to develop our musical perception skills to function at the same level as our instrumental and vocal abilities, thereby achieving a more balanced, dynamic musicianship. Staple musical elements include: melodic and harmonic intervals, modes and scales, triad and seventh arpeggios and chords, chord progressions and core voiceleading principles. Using comprehensive handouts with companion audio files, a strong emphasis is placed on the voice for mastering these elements. Basic sightsinging skills are taught to develop vocal agility and more rapid assimilation of course materials.

Notational Fluency for Transcription and Dictation: Saturdays 11am-12pm

The "Notational Fluency for Transcription and Dictation" course works on developing notational fluency for staple musical elements, dictation of brief diatonic melodic lines, then building to transcription of longer jazz solo excerpts which use a greater degree of chromaticism. Basic theoretical concepts are used to refine notational skills and examine key aspects of the improvised line.

Both 10-week courses will meet on the following Saturdays: October 3, 10, 17, 24 , 31, November 7, 14, 21, December 5 and 12 (no class on November 28th for Thanksgiving weekend). These classes will be part of NYJW's new trimester series, following a slightly different format than their other workshops. Each course will be a 10-class weekly series available as a complete package for the participant to experience from beginning to end.

Given the critical interconnections between both classes, it is recommended that students enroll in both courses to achieve maximum benefits in musicianship. To encourage dual enrollment, NYJW will offer a discount of 20% on the second class.
