Mike Zabrin's new single "Slice" fuses funk, jazz, and R&B (Published: November 23, 2015)
At only 23, bassist Mike Zabrin is already establishing himself as a funk firecracker, able to weave indelible, sweltering grooves that once dominated radio and dance clubs in the '70s.
A technical and artistic wiz in both performance and production, Zabrin is generating a buzz in Chicago with his fiery R&B chops. The kid's talent is undeniable, and his new single "Slice" offers a bracing introduction to a young star on the rise.
Zabrin's hypnotic, tightly knotted bass lines on "Slice" stitch together elements of jazz, funk, and R&B for a quick knockout punch. Backed by drummer Dana Thompson, keyboardist Hayden Ashley, saxophonist Bryan Fritz, trumpeter Connor Bernhard, and guitarist Jeff Swanson, Zabrin brings on the heat, jamming with infectious energy as the band picks up steam.
Thompson's sturdy drums creates a solid kick while Ashley's bouncy Rhodes sweetens the rhythm section. The soulfulness of Fritz's tenor sax adds a wonderfully old-school vibe to the track.
