Brian Newman Quintet to Headline at Cincinnati's Xavier University on January 24
(Published: December 29, 2015)

(CINCINNATI) - He is best known as Lady Gaga's jazz bandleader, but trumpeter extraordinaire and crooner Brian Newman will bring his own blend of classic and contemporary music to Cincinnati, when he headlines a show at Xavier University's Gallagher Theater on Sunday, January 24, with the Brian Newman Quintet.

Newman, who graduated from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and cut his teeth performing at local venues, credits Cincinnati with being a major influence on his career.

"I am excited to be coming back to perform for the Xavier Music Series because I feel so connected to Cincinnati," he said. "Guys like John Von Ohlen, Steve Schmidt and Ed Moss, who I still look up to, taught me so much. There were also great musicians I met at school that were super helpful, like Alex Smith and Andrew Neff. I wanted to be a real New York City jazz player and the Cinci scene had a huge impact on making that happen."

Since relocating to New York, Newman has made a name for himself performing at some of the Big Apple's finest jazz clubs. And, of course, there is his work with Lady Gaga. In addition to touring with the pop superstar, Newman collaborated on her Grammy-winning album "Cheek to Cheek," which she recorded with the great Tony Bennett. The album featured arrangements by Newman and his band. The single "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" debuted at number one in Billboard.

Meanwhile, Newman plans to release his own debut album in 2016, produced by "Cheek to Cheek" producer Dae Bennett.

"What fascinates me about Brian is how he performs classic songs but makes them sound fresh and new," said Polina Bespalko, director of the Xavier University Music Series." "He encompasses both jazz and swing, and he breaks down generational walls. His music appeals to audiences of all ages. I think he could be the next Sinatra."

While in Cincinnati, Newman plans to teach a master class at the acclaimed School for Creative and Performing Arts.

Opening for the Brian Newman Quintet on January 24 will be pianist/composer Dan Karlsberg & The ‘Nati 6, whose album "The ‘Nati 6" was released in 2015, and which is currently nominated for a Cincinnati Entertainment Award (CEA) in both Jazz and Album of the Year categories.

"It's an honor to be involved with the Xavier Music Series, because it is known for featuring world-class artists," Karlsbeg said. "I can't wait to perform on the same stage as Brian Newman and other old friends of mine from Cincinnati's jazz community."

The Xavier University Music Series will present the Brian Newman Quintet featuring Dan Karlsberg & The ‘Nati 6 in the Gallagher Theater at Xavier University on Sunday, January 24, at 3:00 p.m. Tickets range in price from $3 to $28 and can be ordered by calling 513-745-3162 or 513-745-3939 or by visiting www.xavier.edu/musicseries.
