Press Release
New York, NY - January 13, 2016 - New Comer, Australian-Born Jazz Vocalist Jane Irving will be performing a showcase at The 55 Bar with a stellar group on Friday January 15, 2016 during APAP, Jazz Connect and Winter Jazz-Fest Week from 4:00pm - 4:45pm. The set will be featuring Jane Irving on Vocals, Mike Eckroth on Piano, Kevin Hailey on Bass and Peter Traunmueller on Drums. She is a striking improviser and delightfully entertaining.
Vocalist Jane Irving has spent most of her life surrounded by music. Initially a childhood classical piano student, she discovered jazz in her late teens. The combination of studied learning and a natural feel for jazz, helped Irving begin to understand the potential of the voice as an instrument for pure self-expression. Irving was born in Sydney, Australia. She began classical piano studies at the age of 6 which continued to the end of school. "When I was 14 my parents started sending me to jazz camps in the school holidays. That's when I first heard jazz - it felt really good."
While living in Australia, Irving's band was highly featured at festivals - Thredbo Jazz Festival; Manly Jazz Festival; South Coast Jazz Festival and Wangaratta Jazz Festival. In 2009 Jane began teaching for the Sydney Improvised Music Association's ‘Young Women In Jazz' program. In 2011, Jane moved to New York with husband, bassist Kevin Hailey. Together they reside in Brooklyn. Irving plays with Ron Affif, Saul Rubin, Sullivan Fortner, Jeremy Manasia, and Steve Williams to name a few and has been playing at various clubs throughout New York, such as: The Zinc Bar, North Square Lounge, Somethin' Jazz Club, Zeb's and The Standard Hotel.
Reviews:
"Lavish talent and striking originality."- John McBeath for The Weekend Australian.
" Her scat crooning is alluring and is bound to stay with you for a long time. "
-‘Singer's Singers' - Dan Singer, New York City
"For those that have not heard Jane Irving, she is the mistress of scat."
- Jazz Action Society, Sydney.
"While some singers make claim by including evergreens from the Great American Songbook in their repertoire, Irving is a jazz singer. Her scatting would be among the most sincere recorded in Australia since Kerrie Biddell as it has genuine instrumental purpose."
-ABC's Limelight Magazine. Peter Wockner.
"Irving's voice is effortlessly projected. Sometimes a phrase is pursued with increasing pressure until the notes glisten, and when suddenly released in a whipping ribbon can give you the shivers." - S.I.M.A. Australia.
