NICOLA BENEDETTI AND THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC PERFORM WEST COAST PREMIERE OF WYNTON MARSALIS' VIOLIN CONCERTO, LED BY CRISTIAN MĂCELARU AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL (Published: July 26, 2016)
The Los Angeles Philharmonic presents an evening featuring the West Coast premiere of Wynton Marsalis' first Violin Concerto performed by Nicola Benedetti and conducted by Cristian Măcelaru. The performance also includes two works by Copland An Outdoor Overture and Symphony No. 3. The evening begins at 8pm on July 28 at the Hollywood Bowl.
Written especially for Benedetti, Marsalis' work draws inspiration from the violin concerto's long history, from its first formation in the Baroque era to the 21st Century; it also incorporates a slow movement inspired by an African American spiritual, and explores Benedetti and Marsalis' own musical heritage in Scottish folk and American jazz music respectively. It is not only a unique fusion of musical styles from around the world but a celebration and representation of collective cultures embodied in one work. The concerto, which was co-commissioned by Ravinia, the LA Phil, National Symphony Orchestra Washington, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra, received its world premiere with the violinist and the LSO under conductor James Gaffigan in London last November.
