South Florida JAZZ Announces SEASON 25 Concert Schedule!
(Published: September 20, 2016)

South Florida JAZZ, the principal purveyors of modern jazz for 25 years, proudly announces its 2016-17-season schedule. All performances will be held at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd on the Nova Southeastern University campus in Davie and commence at 8:00 p.m.

Under the aegis of Artistic Director Ron Weber and Artistic Advisor Gary Burton, this lineup is among the strongest in the organization's storied history of excellence. It features both venerated, legendary luminaries and rising stars, all of whom have attained international recognition. The focal point is a special mid-season concert by the 20-tiime Grammy-awarded guitarist Pat Metheny with his new quartet. It should be an extraordinary Silver Anniversary season.

The 25th Anniversary 2016-17 Concert Schedule

November 5, 2016

Trinidad-born and still in his 20s, trumpeter Etienne Charles is a compelling and exciting artist ushering jazz into groundbreaking territory. His Creole Soul band represents a captivating journey of new jazz expression, tapping into myriad styles rooted in his Afro-Caribbean background and plumbing the musical depths of the islands from calypso to Haitian voodoo music and melding it with jazz. The results are electrifying!

Combine mastery of jazz keyboard technique with decades of real world experience performing to global audiences around the world, and it's no wonder that Benny Green has been hailed as the most exciting hard-swinging, hard-bop pianist to ever emerge from Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. In the intervening decades since his first professional appearance, Benny has recorded, performed and collaborated with the most celebrated artists of the last half-century.

Since its formation in 2006, the NYSQ is a band that has developed a near-telepathic relationship having played together in a variety of settings. Conceptually, the NYSQ strives to develop its own language within the traditional vocabulary, performing well-known standard jazz repertoire, cleverly reconstructed to liberate the players with essentially a blank slate for classic and recognizable melodies.

AN EVENING WITH PAT METHENY with Antonio Sanchez, Linda Oh, & Gwilym Simcock

Metheny's versatility and global reach is without peer. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Ornette Coleman and David Bowie. He possesses a body of work that includes compositions for solo guitar, small groups, large orchestras, and the robotic Orchestrion project, while sidestepping the limits of any one genre. His 20 Grammy Awards are a testament to his status in the industry.

Now an NEA Jazz Master Fellowship to go with seven Grammy Awards, Gary Burton is the most important vibraphonist extant and arguably of all time. His various collaborations particularly with Chick Corea and Pat Metheny, are renowned. The sublime duo performances with pianist Makoto Ozone date back to 1983. They remain active collaborators despite Ozone's successful foray into pure classical performance, a rare occurrence for a jazz musician. This concert is important on several levels.

April 8, 2017

Stanley Jordan is the most gifted guitarists of his generation, renowned as the uncontested master of the spectacular two-handed tap technique that allows him to play rhythm and melody simultaneously. Perhaps more astounding is his ability to play guitar and piano simultaneously, switching the melody from one instrument to the other seamlessly. Stanley Jordan is, however, much more than a technical phenomenon. His interpretations - from Bach to Bird to the Beatles - are true masterpieces. But the strength and depth of his multi-faceted music stem from his belief in the power of his art. For Stanley, making music has always been more than just entertainment; it is a genuine restorative journey, which will inspire and heal the soul, in the immediate and utterly therapeutic sense of the word.

The newest sensation in Afro-Cuban jazz literally comes straight from Havana. Pianist Harold, with a Mack Ave Records contract under his belt and his first record, El Viaje, on the stands, is on his way to international stardom. Harold is accompanied blazing drummer-brother Adrián Ruy López-Nussa and bassist Julio César González. Together they have lit up the Monterey and Montreal Jazz festivals, the Kennedy Center and the Blue Note n New York. Next stop South Florida JAZZ!

June 10, 2017

Along with five Grammy Awards and engaging personality, Christian McBride is the most recorded bassist of his generation. McBride makes his third appearance for South Florida JAZZ, this time with a new trio and a new vibe. Rising star pianist Emmett Cohen and veteran guitarist Rodney Jones guarantee an outstanding concluding show to a fabulous milestone season.
