Golnar & Mahan deliver Iran-based jazz to the world on new album
(Published: February 28, 2018)

A feast of colorful sounds with a special fusion flair, Golnar & Mahan stand out for their blend of contemporary and traditional influences, representing the current face of the Iranian music scene with style, pathos, and creativity.

These talented performers recently joined forces to create their
brand new studio project, an titled Derakht (tree in Farsi).
This record blurs the lines between different ideas and philosophy,
not only borrowing from the many languages of jazz music, but
also taking inspiration from their land's traditions and other far
reaching inspirations, from Afro-Cuban grooves to oriental folk.

Ever since collaborating in 2011, when they first met in Vienna,
Austria, Golnar Shahyar (vocals, guitar, piano, and percussion) and Mahan Mirarab (guitar, fretless guitar, and oud) knew that they had the potential to create something absolutely remarkable.

Derakht is a textural and multi-dimensional album, which has a kaleidoscopic approach to composition. The skilled instrumentalists behind this record really added many strong foundational layers to the sound of this release, but the tracks are free-form and highly personal, with a very instinctive feel. This record seamlessly bridges the divide between a variety of musical
cultures, creating something innovative in the process.
