Bahamian Junkanoo on Lincoln Road Saturday
(Published: March 06, 2018)

Saturday, March 10, 2-4 PM FREE: The Lincoln Road B.I.D. presents Live on Lincoln, featuring The Sunshine Junkanoo Band. Some say the Bahamians built Miami. Early immigrants, they laid down the first roads and then laid out the towels and sheets for the area's first tourists. The drums and horns of Bahamian junkanoo music certainly have marched willy-nilly through the Miami soundscape since the beginning of the Twentieth Century. In Overtown Bahamian migrants founded the Sunshine Junkanoo Band in 1957 under the direction of Bruce Beneby. Here's what Harry Wayne Casey had to say on the Bahamian inspiration behind KC and the Sunshine Band, whose "Shake Your Booty" was number-one in 1976! "I'd gone to a wedding and there was a Bahamian Junkanoo band there. And I just wanted to capture that sound - it was so infectious - on record. And I did this song called ‘Blow Your Whistle.'From there, of course, it was called KC and the Sunshine Junkanoo Band. And then, on the second record, we dropped the Junkanoo part." Sunshine Junkanoo is still going strong in the heart of Miami. Live on Lincoln is held at the 1111 Lincoln Road stage, at Alton Road. Please note the 2 PM start time.
