LA-Based Indie Rock/Pop Duo H. Kink Premiere New Video, as Favorable Early Coverage Runs for Debut Album

"‘Wish I Were Here' is so engaging, I can hardly believe it's their debut"

"The ambitious, genre-defying LP features a lush 12 tracks that find the band exploring a range of themes - from hope to friendship to heartache - in a fusion of pop, rock, electronic, country and more"

"Exciting retro rock"..."H.Kink's song "Kill All The Rats," sounds as if it was made for the next Quentin Tartantino movie"

Los Angeles-based indie rock/pop duo H. Kink has premiered a wonderfully odd new video for their single,  ‘I'm Nice Like That'. The track comes from their 8/16 debut album ‘Wish I Were Here' - check out the song/video: https://www.youtube.com/w...

H. Kink features Lisa Rieffel and Timm Sharp, both known for their TV credits as well as their music, and they certainly bring their performance chops to the irreverent clip. Timm is on Sunny in Philadelphia this season and was previously a series regular on Enlightened with Laura Dern and on Blunt Talk with Patrick Stewart. Lisa is well-known from her roles on King of Queens, Empty Nest, the film ‘Girltrash' and more.

H. Kink's aesthetic is smart, witty and subversive, and early reviews have praised the approach, describing the collection as an  "ambitious, genre-defying LP (that) features a lush 12 tracks that find the band exploring a range of themes - from hope to friendship to heartache - in a fusion of pop, rock, electronic, country and more." "Exciting retro rock"..."H.Kink's song "Kill All The Rats," sounds as if it was made for the next Quentin Tartantino movie."

Of the new video and focus track, Rieffel says, "This is a song about having to lower your standards in order to actually raise them. In an Instagram world, everyone is selling something. Everyone is a brand. People are products. Some girls are pretty little dolls with perfect skin and teeth. Some have ambition. Some take pics of their toast. This is my fuck-all-that anthem. I'm a slob, I'm a jerk, I have cellulite and I'm better for all of it."

Call it retro-chic, call it modern electronic pop, call it The Eighties on acid - whatever the descriptive terms, you'll come close but won't nail what makes H. Kink a smart and tasty treat. The guitar riffs are invigorating, the kitsch is relentless and witty (akin to of Montreal,) the subversive throwback videos are ‘all-in', the quirky beats evoke Bow Wow Wow at their ‘I Want Candy' zeitgeist, the vocals hint at Gwen Stefani unhinged, or maybe Dale Bozzio on amphetamines.

From the aggressively rocking first single (above) to the irreverent tripping of ‘No Whammys', from the darkly vengeful spoken-lyrics of ‘Kill All The Rats' to the electrified Country twang of ‘Hit the Road', this is a collection built to defy expectations. Rieffel's vocals range from coy to simmering to explosive, a swirl of sounds that suit the eclectic repertoire and homespun production techniques.

Writer Laurie Fanelli, who interviewed Rieffel for a feature in Eponymous Review (below,) praised the album: "I love the incorporation of playfulness into each song whether it's about frustration, anxiety or betrayal," "'Wish I Were Here' is so engaging, I can hardly believe it's their debut." "I truly loved the album."

The ambitious, genre-defying LP features a lush 12 tracks that find the band exploring a range of themes - from hope to friendship to heartache - in a fusion of pop, rock, electronic, country and more.
We recently caught up with Rieffel, where she discussed her collaboration with Sharp and the process of writing and recording H. Kink's aforementioned debut album Wish I Were Here. See below for the exclusive premiere of the album's track "Kill All The Rats," which Rieffel wrote through angry tears in the wake of a trusted friend's betrayal, and scroll down for our complete Q&A interview the H. Kink frontwoman.

The musical duo of Lisa Rieffel and Timm Sharp are preparing to release their debut album "Wish I Were Here" on August 16th under the name H.Kink. Their new twelve-song release begins with the a short, acoustic folk number named "Hello," which is where the sweetness ends as "No Whammys" is an exciting retro rock number. They keep the flashback going with the seventies mash-up of disco and rock with the songs "I'm Nice Like That" and "It's Yours." H.Kink's song "Kill All The Rats," sounds as if it was made for the next Quentin Tartantino movie, while "Hit The Road" is a swinging country song that is hard to resist. H.Kink close out their new album with the eighties pop vibe of "All I Can Do Is Try" and the acoustic folk duet of "Otto." A new interview with Lisa Rieffel ran in VENTS Magazine: https://ventsmagazine.com...

VENTS also exclusively premiered the track ‘No Brainer' :

The project is smart, sassy and cool, and the songs rock like hell. Anxiety, betrayal, loneliness, sex, reverence, drugs. It's all there. Late last year, the band's award-winning video for ‘It's Yours' caused a stir -- a drugged-out mash-up of circa 1985 Magic Garden and The Muppet Show, which StereoGum described as a "debauched puppet farce", adding of H. Kink's commitment to push it to the edge and beyond, "Sometimes...someone goes all the way with it, and you can't help but respect it." Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/w...

‘Wish I Were Here' credits:
Produced by Kevin Mills in 2019 @ Wendy & Lisa's Treehouse, Hensen Studios; Produced by Luke Tierney in 2019 @ Laurel Ceezy Studio; Produced by H. Kink in 2019; Mixed by Rick Parker
All songs written and performed by H. Kink
Additional instrumentation by Luke Tierney, Dan Grody, and Jolee Dunn

H. Kink Bio:
Indie duo H. Kink (the alter-superego of Lisa Rieffel and Timm Sharp) are two Los Angeleans renouncing 20th century linear songwriting in favor of something a little less definable, a bit sassier and harder to pin down.

Faintly art-rock, with a theatrical, funhouse lean - H. Kink dive similar experimental depths as of Montreal or Cocteau Twins... but with decidedly arousing self-production techniques (acoustic guitar recorded on a Rite-Aid lapel mic) that instantly become fully produced when looped frantically through the Montserrat Neve modules and Urei 1176LN compressors at Wendy & Lisa's fabled bungalow studios wherein the duo recorded and mixed their debut album 'Wish I Were Here', in early 2019.

While sticking mainly to the assortments of dirty bar-bathroom femmepop, the duo occasionally swim into more languid waters, such as love balladry or pseudo-country ... before departing instantly back into its comfort zone which is postpost post-adolescent pop-heat loops, tunnel-visioned ass shakers propelled by psychedelic shrapnel, harmonizing and tripping along until the pills wear off, the sun comes up, or probably both.

Bipolar mood swings, an obsession with 818-Hollywood, lust, and self-loathing/discovery, all jammed into thumping pop-voids take us to the far left of what can be accomplished when locked inside a hot, windowless room outfitted with nothing but a MIDI Controller, an acoustic guitar, and a laptop...      ~ Jay Carlos, Tight.AF
