The New York-based Mingus Big Band will host the non-profit charity Experience Ayiti (XA) during October, to bring awareness and raise funds for XA's mission in Haiti. The residency will take place at New York's Jazz Standard on Mondays beginning October 7, followed by each consecutive Monday that month; October 14, 21, and 28. Sets are at 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm; for ticket information visit: http://www.jazzstandard.c...
Experience Ayiti was founded by Haitian-American saxophonist Godwin Louis, alongside three fellow musicians of Haitian descent, Pauline Jean, Johnbern Thomas, and Jhonson "Jhony Keys" Francois. Since 2016, the organization has sponsored numerous musicians and educators to travel to Haiti to help distribute musical instrument donations, coach ensembles, conduct workshops, and perform with local musicians. Past participants include Etienne Charles, Aaron Goldberg, Michael Feinberg, Bennie Wallace, Jean Caze, Sarah Price, Charles Goold, Allan Mednard, Harvel Nakundi, Billy Buss, Jonathan Michel, and Melanie Charles.
The Mingus Big Band collaboration kicks off Experience Ayiti's 2019 fundraising campaign, which culminates with a fundraising concert on November 1 at St. Peter's Church (651 Lexington Ave, New York); festivities begin at 6:00 pm. Throughout the October Jazz Standard residency, patrons are encouraged to bring new and used musical instruments (working condition) and accessories (reeds, strings sticks, etc.) in exchange for discounts on Mingus tickets and merchandise. There will also be limited edition T-shirts available for sale with proceeds going directly to Experience Ayiti. Patrons may also donate online via PayPal through the charity's website.
