Bloom/Leighton Duo to Celebrate Jazz Standards

The St. Stephen's Concert Series in Cohasset MA presents the versatile and virtuosic duo of Peter H. Bloom (flute) and Mark Leighton (guitar) on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at 2:00 pm, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 16 Highland Ave, Cohasset MA 02025. Free admission. Information: 781-383-1083. The program features swinging jazz standards by Harold Arlen, George Shearing, Hoagy Carmichael, and others, plus sizzling bebop tunes by Dexter Gordon and Bud Powell. Also on the program: chamber music by Franz Schubert, Mauro Giliuani, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Jacques Ibert.

Peter and Mark have performed together for 25 years, winning praise for superb musicianship and entertaining concerts spanning the jazz and classical traditions.

Peter H. Bloom, flute, concertizes in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand and is featured on 45 recordings (Sony Classical, Dorian, Leo, other labels). Acclaimed as both a classical and jazz artist, he performs with noted ensembles, including Ensemble Chaconne, Ensemble Aubade, The Makrokosmos Orchestra, and the world-renowned Aardvark Jazz Orchestra (47th season). He has appeared with jazz luminaries Sheila Jordan, Charles Neville, Ricky Ford, Jaki Byard, Geri Allen, and others. The Boston Globe called his playing "a revelation for unforced sweetness and strength," while Arts Fuse wrote, "His solos on flute and amplified flute are always highlights of a performance." Mr. Bloom is contributing editor for Noteworthy Sheet Music. He has given lectures, classes and workshops at colleges and universities across the globe.

Mark Leighton, guitar, is known for his superb artistry and wide-ranging repertoire. He has performed at venues across the Northeast including Colby College, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, King's Chapel, Corning Community College, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Elmira College, Eastern Nazarene College, and the Boston Public Library. He is a member of Copley Chamber Players and performs regularly with acclaimed jazz artists like Billy Novick and Ted Powers. He serves on the Applied Music Faculty at Colby College, teaches at St. George's School in Newport, and was Artistic Director of First Night Quincy for 20 years. A graduate of New England Conservatory of Music, Mr. Leighton studied with noted guitarists Robert Sullivan, David Leisner and Sharon Isbin, among others.
