On Friday, April 27th, New Haven's Firehouse 12 will present two sets by drummer/composer Matt Wilson's acclaimed quartet, Arts & Crafts. Wilson, who was recently named Rising Star Drummer in DownBeat's annual Critics Poll for the fourth consecutive year, performed in pianist Frank Kimbrough's trio at Firehouse 12 on March 23rd, and is currently on tour with Matt Wilson's Arts & Crafts in support of the band's newest CD, The Scenic Route (Palmetto Records).

"Whenever he plays, drummer Matt Wilson exudes an infectious enthusiasm that affects audience and musicians alike," writes AllAboutJazz-New York's Sean Patrick Fitzell. "Wilson covers a swath of musical territory with Arts & Crafts, knowing that getting there is at least half the fun." JazzTimes' Steve Greenlee adds, "From splendid originals to inventive covers-including the fiery modern jazz of Ornette Coleman's 'Rejoicing,' the straight-up bebop of Thelonious Monk's 'We See' and the sophisticated, loping arrangement of 'Tenderly'-this group excels in every way."

Wilson is one of the busiest and most respected drummers of his generation. He has appeared on more than 100 recordings, including titles from the Either/Orchestra, Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, Charlie Kohlhase, Lee Konitz, Mario Pavone, Dewey Redman and a variety of projects with his fellow members of the Jazz Composers Collective. In addition to his extensive sideman work, Wilson has released seven CDs as a leader for the Palmetto Records label, and performed around the world with his two main groups, the Matt Wilson Quartet and Matt Wilson's Arts & Crafts. He is also a clinician for Zildjian cymbals and Pearl Drums and an occasional contributor to Modern Drummer magazine. Learn more at http://www.mattwilsonjazz.com/

About Firehouse 12:

Firehouse 12 is an award-winning bar, state of the art recording studio and unusually intimate music venue located in New Haven's historic Ninth Square District. Its distinctive 75-seat performance space, located inside the recording studio, offers world-class acoustics and unprecedented technical possibilities to both listeners and performers. Many of the most respected names in jazz and creative improvised music have performed at Firehouse 12 since it opened its doors in April 2005.

The local media has called it "one of the region's prime centers for new and improvised music" (Owen McNally, Hartford Courant), noting both its "astutely stylish, updated-classic aesthetic" (Hugh Elton, New Haven Advocate) and its dedicated fan base of "people who bring near-religious reverence to the music, producing an exchange of energy that often fires great performances" (Regina DeAngelo, New Haven Independent).

The Arts Council of Greater New Haven recognized owner/producer/recording engineer Nick Lloyd with a 2006 Arts Award for his "visionary restoration" of this landmark firehouse building, which also earned the architects, Gray Organschi Architecture, a 2006 Design Award in the preservation category from Connecticut's chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

In 2007, Firehouse 12 founded its own label, Firehouse 12 Records, with the intention of releasing a mix of physical and digital-only recordings, including music recorded live during recent performances. Its first new releases, the Anthony Braxton 12+1tet's 9 Compositions (Iridium) 2006 and the Taylor Ho Bynum Sextet's The Middle Picture, will be released April 3rd.
