Chairman Bao takes jazz to next level on new EP (Published: November 25, 2019)
Chairman Bao takes jazz music to the next level; that is the first thing that will come into your mind once you start listening to his new EP wittingly entitled, Jazz Ambigrams.
This record consists of six individual tracks that are unique but seemingly are parts of a single entity all at the same time. It is a bit odd (in a positive way), as most instrumental jazz albums would feature either tracks that are totally different from each other or they have that one general motif to work on.
Listening to the EP would give you the feeling of exploring through a big picture or storybook of jazz. It is like going through different jazz phases all throughout the whole day. You start tour off with "Carniero," a song that has noticeable elements of bossa nova which really fits as I learned that this is also a tribute to the great Brazilian bossa nova pioneer Joao Gilberto.
After a strong start, we then transition to cool and groovy musical selections with the songs e"Single Origin" and "Livewood." The relaxing "Autumn Leaves" equally features excellent improvisation together with "Monster Mansion."
Capping it all off is "Lennon Wall," which has classical elements that makes the EP a complete package. Jazz Ambigrams is a highly recommended jazz record that features a high level of skill and artistry.
