Jim Satten jams with fusion and funk on new single (Published: January 20, 2020)
Jim Satten is a talented musician with a particular focus on guitar. His sound is very diverse, and it could be characterized as a blend of styles such as funk, rock, jazz, fusion, and many others.
Recently, Satten set out to release a new single titled "The Party," which seems like a stunning and kaleidoscopic collection of ideas and guitar chops. His playing is very expressive, and every note matters. What really stands out is the fact that this song combines complex playing with minimalist melodies and beautifully restrained lead guitar work, showcasing his wide range of skills and guitar sounds.
Statten knows not to overplay, letting each note be just as expressive and eloquent as it needs to be in order to liven up the arrangement and strengthen the song. has a one-of-a-kind flavor, which makes me think of artists as diverse as Al Di Meola and Pat Metheny. The track has got a bit of a twangy sound to it, with a cool attack tone that reminds me of classic 6-string heroes such as Santana and David Gilmour.
On this song, I can kind of hear the minimalist approach of the former, and the meticulous search for tones of the latter. While many guitarists would try and fill the empty spaces with as many notes as possible, Satten doesn't just get lost in a mumble-jumble of pointless virtuoso licks. On the other hand, every guitar part is like a conversation: there is an answer and there is a question, with so many exciting dynamics in between. From jazz-like clean tones to screamer-type overdriven sounds, he is able to create such an exciting array of tones. In addition to the guitars, I also really love the groovy drums, and the nice '70s synths.
Today, genre barriers don't mean much anymore, and this is a trend that is even affecting music on a mainstream level. I always find it very refreshing to come across artists such as Satten - gifted performers who are always happy to set the bar higher and really make the most out of their creative resources and actual musical skills (which in this case are absolutely impressive, incidentally!)
