Janet Grice dazzles with the bassoon on new album
(Published: February 20, 2020)

Although based in New York, Janet Grice's heart seems to belong to Rio de Janeiro, where she has visited numerous times. Grice's affection for Brazilian jazz is exuberant and infectious as openly displayed on her new album, Proezas for Bassoon. In this collaboration with Paulo Siqueira - who is skilled with the sax, the flute, and drums - Grice dazzles with her talents on the bassoon.

The bassoon is an instrument that seldom takes the lead and it is often relegated to a supporting role in ensembles of various nature. However, this beautiful instrument has a rich and nuanced tone with many stunning dynamics. Grice and Siqueira join forces to create a new release that pays tribute to the perks of this magical yet sometimes overlooked instrument. It's a truly special recording.

The bassoon arrangements and phrasings are absolutely phenomenal on this release, pushing the boundaries of the instrument, while still staying true to its voice and spirit. This is a breath of fresh air in the music landscape, and as a musical work, Proezas for Bassoon might delight listeners with a fresh perspective that still feels timeless and warmly familiar. Throughout the span of 11 tracks, this fantastic studio project covers a lot of ground in terms of creativity, and it is amazing to witness the creativity and masterful execution of these talented, world-class musicians.
