Trumpet player Mike Cottone releases beautiful "Thank You" to his influences
(Published: March 18, 2020)

Trumpet player/composer Mike Cottone is focused on music that captures the warmth and essence of the finest jazz. Recently, he set out to release a new project titled Thank You. This is an innovative release which combines modern sonic aesthetics with a timeless, smooth sound, balancing things out to perfection. This record is a superb example of what it means to be a jazz musician in this day and age.

The songs on this effort are well-produced and masterfully arranged, highlighting the artist's ability to set the bar higher and come up with a sound that's exciting and sophisticated yet also quite charming and easy to relate to for a broad audience. In other words, you do not need to be a hardcore jazz head in order to enjoy Cottone and his performances. This stylish LP has something that speaks to people from all walks of life, and the crystal-clear production definitely helps. One of the most notable aspects of this album is undoubtedly the artistry that appears throughout it.

Cottone is undeniably a world-class performer, and what makes him so distinguished is the fact that he combines emotional responses that are genuine with a stunning control of the technical elements that lead to his excellent musicianship. There is substantial chemistry between band members as well, and when you listen to this music, you really have the impression that everything is in the right place, like the pieces of a complex puzzle all falling together.

Songs such as "The Way It Is" and classics like "Killing Me Softly," two highlights on this lovely record, are actually perfect examples of what I am talking about. Then again, I am also very impressed with "Lost," one of the best tracks on this release, especially due to the minimalist approach and the dynamic nature of the recording. Last, but not least, "A Song For You" is a cut that serves as a fantastic conclusion to an greatly satisfying experience, where every twist and turn leads to more creativity and even better ideas, song after song.

Cottone is a versatile performer with a smooth tone, and Thank You is an album that truly speaks for itself. We are all welcome for it.
