Interview: Eva Kano discusses her new album, 'Stories' (Published: October 17, 2020)
Composer/pianist/ukelele player Eva Kano has just released a superb new album, Stories.
Q: It has to be asked: How are you doing during this pandemic? How has it affected your musical career?
A: Obviously, my regular gig playing at some local restaurant was canceled. Like other musicians, I've missed playing in front of customers. Instead, I was focusing on producing this album. And I have been recording my performance videos to post on my social media accounts. Unfortunately, Facebook and Instagram stopped allowing everyone to post any music video playing the songs that she/he doesn't own lately, so, I've been posting only my own compositions on them.
Q: How would you describe your latest album?
A: The collection of my stories about what I have been inspired. Each composition has a background story.
Q: I'm sure you've been asked this before, but for music listeners who aren't familiar with you, what was your initial motivation in creating music?
A: Music has been always something to make me happy and to take me to the world where I can feel freely since I was a little girl. Music is my friend. Creating music is to make me feel like I'm producing something meaningful to my life. Writing music (composing) is a great achievement for me.
Q: Who are the first artists that moved you the most?
A: I have a classical piano background. Bach, Mozart, and Chopin influenced me a lot. But, I was inspired by Toto's music when I listened to many pop songs.
Q: Has your artistic vision changed since you began? If so, how?
A: I started to listen more to jazz since I moved to New York around 1998. The jazz chords and phrasing, and swing sense have changed my preference.
Q: In what genre do you see yourself fitting in? It can be more than one.
A: No division between classical music, pop and jazz (including Bossa Nova) in my music world.
Q: What do you hope people will experience with your music?
A: I would like people to be inspired by my music and make their days and feeling much better after they listen to my music.
Q: Do you finance your music yourself?
A: I usually get some financial support from my fan/supporters.
