With joyful band interplay, the spark of a live audience and the quiet beauty of Jana Herzen's vocals and guitar, upcoming jazz/pop/world fusion concert album captures a pre-Covid moment in time

Recorded at Joe's Pub, JANA HERZEN:LIVE is out March 12 on Motéma, with full video version to follow and vinyl slated for summer

Featuring and produced by renowned bassist Charnett Moffett

Herzen "...has this superb tone of voice between folk and jazz à la Joni Mitchell, with intonations sometimes close to the diva Nina Simone. This vocalist is absolutely to be discovered." - Jazz at Six O'Clock, France

"A reminder of the need of live music to return once again."

The Record-Journal

Concert fans and musicians long for a return to spirited live performances and communal, joyful gatherings. As Covid spread across the globe this past year, these shared, in-person experiences between artists and audiences all but stopped.

Fortunately, Jana Herzen and Charnett Moffett recorded a very special night -- a soulful, dynamic live performance at Joe's Pub in New York City, pre-Covid. The result is ‘Jana Herzen:LIVE', available March 12th on CD and digital on the Motéma label, with a full concert video to follow, and vinyl slated for summer.

The celebratory concert featured Herzen on vocals and guitar, veterans Charnett Moffett on fretless electric bass and Brian Jackson on piano and keyboards, spirited young drummer Corey Garcia, as well as the gifted Irwin Hall on multi-reeds and woodwinds. Hall's fine contributions on saxophone, flute and clarinet evoke the vibe of Sting's ‘The Dream of the Blue Turtles' tour, which memorably featured Branford Marsalis.

Moffett, who assembled the road-tested band and served as Music Director for the concert, was inspired by the chemistry and textures he felt on stage to produce the show as a live, audiophile album. He and Herzen hope the band's joyous performance provides some much-needed healing at this difficult time.

Highlights abound on ‘LIVE', from the timely anthem ‘In The Name of Love' to the cool vibe of ‘Lightening the Load', with its strong guitar work by Herzen; from the danceable romantic Reggae-pop of ‘Like A River' (with subtle backing vocals by the band,) to the high-spirited groove-heavy crowd-pleaser, ‘On The Outside'. There are also magnetic, quiet moments: The elegant beauty of Herzen's ‘Night Blooming Jasmine' on which Hall's alto-flute and Jackson's delicate piano gently circle around the lush melody, and ‘Precious Air', a mesmerizing, dreamy and poetic meditation on the very breath of life.
Early critical response for LIVE has been strong: Mezzo TV France has selected the album as a Top 5 Jazz Album for March 2021; the prominent French JazzASeizHeur blog compared Herzen's sound that of divas Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone and called her a vocalist "Absolutely to be discovered;" Jazziz praised the first single, ‘Like A River' as "a romantic reggae-swing tune;" and The Record-Journal weighed in with an upbeat song-by-song review praising the album's flow through jazz, folk, pop, and Latin jazz and called out the "playful, addictive melody," of Herzen's "Like a River". Referenced above, Jean Luc Martin of France's Jazz A Seiz Heur (Jazz at Six 0'Clock) opened his review of LIVE with the observation that "Herzen surrounds herself with excellent musicians who give a very particular quality to her music..." and he closes with this strong advice: "Do not hesitate to discover her because you can only fall under the spell of this moving vocalist..."

‘LIVE' was recorded at Joe's Pub in New York City on October 29, 2019. The album was produced by Charnett Moffett and mixed by Eric Glauser at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco, with additional engineering by Paul Rollnick, and mastering by Multi-GRAMMY-winning engineer Alan Silverman (Judy Collins, Norah Jones, Chaka Khan, Dolly Parton...)

Herzen and Moffett, who have worked together since 2008, have been especially prolific in recent years, touring internationally prior to COVID, recording two Herzen band albums, two duo projects, and an upcoming Moffett studio project. When COVID hit they began broadcasting from home and writing new music. On February 10th, they dropped the single Mystery, via their NETT DUO side-project, in celebration of their first wedding anniversary (https://nettduo.lnk.to/mystery).

The couple's individual and joint charisma shines brightly in the many shows and online broadcasts they have done through the years, most recently on a new "Mondays with Kuumbwa" episode which just posted on March 1st (https://youtu.be/LW4LtWgrJJo) and in the videos from this Joe's Pub performance where they can be seen graciously co-leading the band from the front line.

"Theirs is a rather wonderful musical partnership" -JazzWISE

"There's something magic whenever Herzen and Moffett make music together. It's pure, soulful and especially beautiful to hear, now, maybe more than ever...Together they're magic." - AMERICAN SONGWRITER
