Moffett and Herzen describe their original music as "a fusion of jazz, free jazz, folk, raga, reggae and Afro-beat" - an element of a deep groove is always present. They also have a knack for reinventing classics, such as Gershwin's "Summertime" performed in this video filmed at Yoshi's in San Francisco in July.


The pair have been especially prolific in recent years. Receiving four-star reviews and detailed appreciation from top jazz publications internationally, and also catching the ear of mainstream outlets - American Songwriter, People Magazine, Paste, AllMusic and Le Monde... The couple are key members of today's jazz royalty: He's a legendary bassist and music innovator who's released 17 albums and played countless top venues with top jazz stars since the 1980's. She's a rising, much acclaimed singer-songwriter and guitarist and also the visionary behind the multi-GRAMMY®-winning, art-first, Motéma label ‘promoting artists of power and distinctions since 2003. Since they first connected in New York City in 2008, they have collaborated twelve acclaimed releases: seven Moffett albums, two Herzen band CDs, three duo albums. An artist with an unusual abundance of spirit, chops, and charisma, Moffett has released seventeen acclaimed albums and toured the world as one of the most innovative and versatile acoustic and electric bassists in jazz. He debuted as a leader on Blue Note Records in 1987 and after stints with other labels through the years, he found a creative home in the Motéma label in 2008 where he's released seven of his fifteen acclaimed albums as a Composer/Leader. Moffett is certified jazz royalty. His career began as an 8-year-old prodigy in his father, drummer/educator Charles Moffett's band (The elder Moffett is revered as one of Ornette Coleman's early collaborators and influences.) Charnett then went on to create with such pivotal artists as Art Blakey, Ornette Coleman, Wynton Marsalis, McCoy Tyner, Tony Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, and Sonny Sharrock, to name a few, appearing on more than 200 prestigious albums, many now considered classics. In 2012 he began a richly fruitful musical collaboration with Motema's founder, the singer/songwriter/producer Jana Herzen. Together they've collaborated on a dozen internationally acclaimed recordings and have toured at key venues in America and abroad. The couple married in February of 2020.

Internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jana Herzen originally hales from the San Francisco Bay Area. After working in the theater in New York City for many years, where she was a co-founder of the legendary MCC Theater, she switched her focus to music in the early 1990's and never looked back. ‘Soup's on Fire' , the first album of her poetic multiculti original music led to the founding of her multi-GRAMMY®-winning tastemaker label, Motéma Music famous for launching such stars as Gregory Porter and Joey Alexander. Herzen began a richly rewarding creative partnership with Charnett Moffett when they released and toured their first duo album, Passion of a Lonely Heart, in 2012. Since then, Herzen and Moffett have worked together on seven band albums, three duo albums, and several singles. They got married in 2020 and are looking forward to many new musical adventures together!
